The chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court urged the state legislature to raise salaries for judges across the state.

Sen. Joan Huffman has filed a bill that proposes to raise the state's base salary for judges from $140,000 to $161,000 — a raise of $21,000 or 15%.

Georgia Chief Justice Michael Boggs used his annual State of the Judiciary address to members of the General Assembly on Tuesday to plug two bills raising the salaries of superior court and statewide judges. “An independent judiciary must be able to attract and retain qualified jurists,” Boggs told a joint session of the Georgia House and Senate.

Texas is poised to increase pay for state court judges for the first time in over a decade, but its highest ranking judge is pressing lawmakers to go even higher.
