WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The Carter G. Woodson Library was once the only public library open to African Americans in Pender County. It all started in 1944 when Mary D. Smith led an effort to fund a public library for African Americans. With approval from Pender County Commissioners and $880 in funding, Smith opened the library in 1946.
