Donald Trump has broken his silence after he was seen chatting and smiling with former US President Barack Obama at Jimmy Carter's funeral on January 9. The President-elect, who retakes office on January 20, sat with the four other remaining living Presidents of the Whitehouse - George Bush, Bill Clinton, Joe Biden and Obama.

President-elect Donald Trump, who has alternated among praising, criticizing and mocking Jimmy Carter, came Wednesday to the Capitol Rotunda to pay his respects to Carter as the 39th president lies in state ahead of his funeral Thursday in the nation's capital.

The two men were seated next to each other at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., talking before Carter’s funeral officially started. Trump leaned in to say something to Obama, who listened before laughing and smiling as Trump continued to speak into Obama’s ear.

Michelle Obama did not attend former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday due to a scheduling conflict, aides to the former first lady told CNN. She was in Hawaii at the time on an extended holiday vacation, her advisers told CNN’s Jeff Zeleny.

The tension between the Trumps and Pences was fueled by the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, when then-President Trump took to X, accusing his vice president of lacking “the courage” to do as he was told and refuse to certify the electoral college votes.

Trump is obviously no fan of Biden, but Obama and his veep also have a famously complex relationship, only made more so after Obama helped nudge Biden to quit the presidential race last summer. Surely Obama feels some frustration that Biden fumbled a possibly winnable race; maybe he couldn’t help spill to his sworn enemy?
